Robot-Era Project: Preliminary Results on the System Usability

Abstract: The European project Robot-Era is an ambitious integrated project (FP7-ICT-2011.5.4), which objective is the development of advanced robotic services, integrated in intelligent environments, to provide independent living to older people. In order to guarantee the matching of the users' need and the demands, two loops of experimentation were conceived, in realistic and real setting. The aim of the paper is to described the methods applied and the main results coming from the first experimental loop, concerning … Show more

“…A good overview of the past, current and future trends in the manufacturing domain can be found in (Kang et al 2016a), while details regarding the standards related to this domain are presented in (Lu, Morris, and Frechette 2016). As this domain is strongly connected to the ICT and cyber-psychical systems (Monostori 2014;Lee, Bagheri, and Kao 2015), related domains such as robotics with new paradigms (Bevilacqua et al 2015) are also represented. The impact of MES systems on the labor force is presented in the early work of (Nasarwanji et al 2009).…”

“…Other robots, like Dustcart, are designed for shopping and garbage transportation [8]. On the contrary, other robots are general purpose, in other words, they are not designed to perform specific tasks, but they could provide a range of services, such as DoRo [9], Care-o-Bot®3 [10] , Pepper [11]. Recently, some of these robots become commercially available, like Buddy from Blue Frog robotics [12], Roomba robot [13] devoted to cleaning task, or Pepper from SoftBank [14] used as a commercial promoter in Japan mall.…”

“…On the one hand, robots are becoming both smarter and cheaper. Multiple projects, such as Robot-Era [1] or CompanionAble [2], are pressing forward and the first affordable personal robots, such as Buddy (http://www.bluefrogrobotics.com/) or Zenbo (https://zenbo.asus.com/) are currently being released to the public. These robots have three purposes: keep company with the user, thus being social towards him/her; monitor the user and provide feedbacks to the medical staff; and help the user by acting.…”
