RoboCup Rescue Simulation Innovation Strategy

Abstract: The RoboCup rescue simulation competitions have been held since 2001. The experience gained during these competitions has supported the development of multi-agent and robotics based solution for disaster mitigation. The league consists of three distinct competitions. These competitions are the agent competition, the virtual robots competition, and the infrastructure competition. The main goal of the infrastructure competition is to increase every year the challenge and to drive the innovation of the league, wh… Show more

“…The agent simulation league provides virtual agents placed on a map of a city that has been damaged by an earthquake event. Competitors focus on different selfisolated AI problems (e.g., task allocation) provided by the contest developing algorithms for them [11]. In addition, all teams have to give a presentation on their solution, which counts towards their final score.…”

“…There are very few research efforts in this domain. For example, the Robocop urban search and rescue (USAR) aims to promote research in collaborative problem solving by multiple robots in a city scale arenas (Visser et al 2015). However, the emphasis of this competition is on cooperative mapping, search and rescue, disaster management, coordination etc., rather than coverage and exploration.…”

“…What was still missing inside the Rescue Simulation League is an environment which is a common ground for both the Agent and Virtual Robot competitions. Inside the Agent competition the focus is on the coordination of rescue teams [20,33]. The competition consists of a simulation environment which resembles a city after an earthquake.…”
