“…Previous studies on RTCs in Karachi have reported on the behaviour of both commuters and drivers, especially bus and truck drivers, as well as local environmental factors (Luby et al 1997, Khan et al 1999, Mirza et al 1999) as important contributing factors towards RTCs and associated deaths and injuries in Karachi. In addition to the said factors, the authors of this study are of the opinion that if the total deaths in RTCs reported from Karachi are divided by five administrative districts, which constitute the city of Karachi, then the total number of RTCs and deaths in RTCs in each district of Karachi will be lower than other districts of Sindh.…”

“…For example, in an observational study of bus drivers in the city of Changsha in China, Wang et al [2] found that 20.2% of 7,611 observed bus stops were not made at the planned bus stops along a pre-defined route. Similarly two studies by Mizra et al [3] and Bessa et al [4] also show that bus services do not follow their predefined route more often than the acceptable level in Karachi, Pakistan, and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil respectively. Bus route violations directly affect the completion of a desired trip, which is more serious that delayed arrival.…”

“…Other factors that can lead to a higher risk of a collision at bus stops may include reduced pedestrian visibility due to transit vehicles, risky bus driver behaviours and risky pedestrian behaviours when boarding or alighting buses at transit stops. [4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12] The objective of this study was to evaluate the relationship between pedestrian-motor vehicle collisions and the built environment features of the bus transit system in Lima, Peru. We examined the presence of formal and informal bus stops, bus bays, painted bus stop areas and dedicated bus lanes.…”
