Risk factors and socio-economic burden in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma operation: a machine learning based analysis

Abstract: Background Surgical resection is the major way to cure pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). However, this operation is complex, and the peri-operative risk is high, making patients more likely to be admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU). Therefore, establishing a risk model that predicts admission to ICU is meaningful in preventing patients from post-operation deterioration and potentially reducing socio-economic burden. Methods We retrospe… Show more

“…Zhang et al. developed a risk model using SVM, logistic regression, and lasso regression, which had a strong predictive effect on the likelihood of ICU admission and length of stay following PDAC surgery ( 49 ). In addition, one study presented a multiparameter analysis model to assess the predictive value of existing parameters and predicted long-term survival in patients with PDAC ( 50 ).…”

“…Furthermore, Zhang et al. developed a predictive model for postoperative ICU admission with an AUC of 0.8 by employing a support vector machine model to analyze clinical features of patients with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma, revealing bilirubin, CA19-9, and preoperative albumin as associated factors for postoperative bleeding in patients ( 37 ). The use of AI in predicting postoperative complications in pancreatic cancer surgery holds great potential in improving patient outcomes and facilitating targeted treatment strategies.…”

“…The risks of surgery could not be underestimated. It is known that the risk of complications is approximately 50% [5]. The main intraoperative risk is hemorrhage, and the main postoperative complication is pancreatic leakage [5].…”
