“…Our results also indicated that gender and operative segments were associated with duration to first flatus. Male gender was reported to be an independent risk factor for postoperative ileus in anterior lumber interbody fusion in the elderly (Horowitz et al, 2018). Surgeons should take the increased risks of postoperative ileus into account when selecting a surgical approach for a male patient.…”

“…The prolonged length of stay following postoperative ileus is consistent with a previous study which found that elderly patients who underwent ALIF complicated by a postoperative ileus had a significantly greater length of hospital stay, which was associated with an additional healthcare cost of more than $2000. [ 21 ] However, our study did identify a nonsignificant increase in the frequency of LLIFs performed at L1-L2, possibly contributing to the number of patients who received abdominal scans since postoperative ileus is more commonly encountered after performing LLIFs at that level. [ 7 ] This data, in conjunction with previous literature, suggests that preoperative counseling of patients regarding the elevated risk of postoperative ileus for LLIFs performed at the L1-2 level is warranted.…”

“… 7–9 In patients undergoing anterior lumbar interbody fusion, POI can prolong hospital stay by 3 days and increase hospitalisation costs by $2400. 10 Reducing the mean length of hospital stay by just 1 day could reduce the cost of the healthcare system in the USA by approximately $1 billion annually. 11 This highlights the importance of treating and decreasing the duration of POI.…”

“…POI can lower patient satisfaction and quality of life, increase the risk of other postoperative complications, prolong hospital stay, and increase readmission rates and hospital costs 7–9. Reducing the mean length of hospital stay by just 1 day could reduce the cost of the healthcare system in the USA by approximately $1 billion annually 11.…”
