Rhythm of Sebum Excretion during the Menstrual Cycle

Abstract: We studied by the Sebutape technique variations in the sebum excretion and in the number of active sebaceous glands during 3 consecutive menstrual cycles. In seborrheic women we found cyclic changes with a maximum sebum excretion during the week before menstruation. In women with a low sebum production, no changes were found.

“…Skin temperature and the balance between the sebum molecular components affect the viscosity and rheology of lipids at the skin surface [62,73]. This could explain in part chronobiological variations in SER and FER including seasonal fluctuations [74] as well as the influence of ovarian [75,76] and perhaps other cycles of unknown periodicity [7]. A circadian rhythm has been found [63,77] with sebum output being greatest in the mid morning and minimal during the late evening and early morning hours.…”

“…There is an inverse relationship between the fluid flux and the fourth power of the radius of the tube in which the fluid passes through. Hence, variations in corneocyte hydration at the lips of follicular openings, as may occur during the ovarian cycle or after occlusion, may influence sebum rheology [75,76,78,79].…”

“…Il existe aussi une autre périodicité importante de type circannuel à laquelle correspondent des manifestations saisonnières [6][7][8][9]. Bien d'autres biorythmes, tels que les rythmes cardiaque, respiratoire et ovarien, sont indépendants de la position de la Terre par rapport au Soleil [2,10,11].…”

“…The amount of sebum may be quantified by morphometry [4][5][6][7][8][9][10] or transmission pho tometry [111-Experience had taught us that sebum drop lets modify the 'white' color of Sebutape into the color of the skin itself. In this study, we wanted to explore the possibility of measuring these color modifications by reflectance colo rimetry at multiple intervals.…”
