Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus: a most successful invasive tick species in West-Africa

Abstract: The cattle tick Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus is known to be a highly reproductive and efficient vector of Babesia bovis, two characters which make this tick a threat to livestock keeping in many continents. The authors identified this tick in Ivory Coast, West Africa, in 2007, and hypothesized the spread to be minimal, as this tick was not observed in previous years. To determine the extent of its distribution and to a lesser extent the possible impact of the tick on the livelihoods of Ivorian smallhold… Show more

“…The cattle tick is well established in Latin America (Evans et al, 2000) and Australasia (Estrada-Peña and Venzal, 2006) and is currently invading the West African region where it was first reported in 2007 (Madder et al, 2007), . It has managed to establish itself and has replaced the indigenous Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) species (Madder et al, 2011). This situation has also been observed in other West-African countries.…”

“…By 2008 it had almost completely displaced the various indigenous Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) spp. on farms around the village where it had first been detected (Madder et al 2011). In 2008, a new focus of invasion was detected in the Department of Mono in south-western Benin, 3 3 West Africa and by 2011 R. microplus had invaded the southern half of that country De Clercq et al 2012).…”
