Rheology and Tack Properties of Biodegradable Isodimorphic Poly(butylene succinate)-Ran-Poly(ε-caprolactone) Random Copolyesters and Their Potential Use as Adhesives

Abstract: The sole effect of the microstructure of biodegradable isodimorphic poly(butylene succinate)-ran-poly(e-caprolactone) random copolyesters on their rheological properties is investigated. To avoid the effect of molecular weight and temperature, two rheological procedures are considered: the activation energy of flow, Ea, and the phase angle versus complex modulus plots. An unexpected variation of both parameters with copolyester composition is observed, with respective maximum and minimum values for the 50/50 c… Show more

“…Surprisingly, the thickness increases with CL content, independently of T s − T c . At T s − T c = 30 °C, the thickness of PBS single crystals is 6.7 nm and the value is 9.0 nm for BS 68 CL 32 . In our previous study on melt crystallized BS x CL y , the long period (L) increased with CL content as shown by SAXS.…”

“…BS x CL y is a typical isodimorphic copolymer system . Müller and co-workers have shown their general thermal properties, crystallization behavior, and diffraction characteristics. , The crystal forms of PBS and PCL are quite different. The PBS α form is monoclinic, with a = 5.23 Å, b = 9.08 Å, c = 10.79 Å, and β = 123.87° .…”

“…According to their synthesis process, biodegradable polymers can be categorised into four classes: biomass products, from microorganisms, from biotechnology, and from petrochemical products [ 19 ]. Among the biodegradable aliphatic polyesters, PBS has good melt processability, excellent mechanical properties and thermal stability, comparable to those of the widely used PE and PP [ 20 ]. PBS is a compostable and biodegradable aliphatic polyester, which can be produced through the condensation of succinic acid and 1,4-butanediol [ 21 ].…”

“…Such analysis is extended to PBS composite films, for which the effect of the incorporation of the selected fillers on the mechanical and barrier properties is analyzed. In a recent study from our group, authors presented the peculiar rheological properties for these PBS-ran-PCL copolymers, and their applications such as hot melt adhesives [27]. Moreover, a thorough analysis of experimental protocols aimed to determine the biodegradation of PBS and its copolyesters is provided, with emphasis on PBS enzymatic degradation.…”
