Rheological studies of high-concentration cellulose sulfate-acetate solutions

Abstract: 661.728.014:532.78 With the method of homogeneous synthesis, various salt forms of cellulose sulfate-acetate containing Li + , Na + , K + , Ca 2+ , Mg 2+ , Zn 2+ , and Co 2+ as compensating cations have been obtained. The flow curves, the concentration and temperature dependences of the shear viscosity of aqueous solutions of cellulose sulfateacetate have a form characteristic of liquid-crystal systems. For solutions of all salts except for potassium salt, spontaneous formation of the anisotropic phase in the … Show more

“…According to ref. [8][9][10][11], this relation is characteristic feature of lyotropic polymer solutions. Figure 6 clear that, the viscosity increased with increasing the concentration up to a critical concentration which corresponding to the appearance of anisotropic phase.…”

“…From the relation of the viscosity versus the concentration, the critical concentration was determined. [8][9][10][11] The characteristic viscosity such as (m) which obtained by plotting log τ versus log D, and Bingham parameters such as Bingham viscosity (η B ) and yield stress (τ o ) were estimated by applying the Bingham model. 6 (Equations (3) and (4)) TEM, transmission electron microscope; XRD, X-ray diffraction analysis.…”

“…Their macromolecules contain ionogenic groups that lead to an increased rigidity of polymer chain, and provide for their high solubility in aqueous media. Salts of cellulose mixed ester, cellulose acetate sulfate (CAS), can be related to this category of derivatives [1][2][3][4][5].…”

“…A further increase of polymer concentration causes an increase of m. This power-law can therefore be used to demonstrate the appearance of the anisotropic phase. The concentration range where m decreases seem to correspond to the range where the drastic drop of the viscosity vs. concentration shows the appearance of an anisotropic phase [118][119][120].…”
