Revision of the genus Coccidula Kugelann (Coleoptera, Coccinellidae)

Abstract: The genus Coccidula Kugelann includes five species distributed in the Holarctic, with one species in North America and four in Palearctic region. Coccidula belongs to the tribe Coccidulini which historically was treated as a separate subfamily within ladybird beetles, but recent studies confirmed its placement as a tribe within the broadly defined subfamily Coccinellinae. All species are revised and a new synonymy of Lithophilus naviauxi Duverger with C. litophiloides Reitter is proposed. Light and electron mi… Show more

“… Thomson 1859 : 161). Note: Chrysomela scutellata Herbst, 1783 is usually listed as the type species of this genus (e.g., Kovář 2007 : 572; Szawaryn et al 2021 : 64) by subsequent designation of Crotch (1874a : 300) but C.G. Thomson’s designation is earlier; both species are currently included in the genus Coccidula .…”

“…some of the Papuan species of Rhyzobius Stephens, 1829 [Tomaszewska 2010]). Usually, Coccidulini are defined as coccinellids with distinct vestiture on dorsal body surface, coarsely facetted eyes, and antennae longer than head width (Ślipiński 2007; Szawaryn et al 2021; Tomaszewska 2010). However, probably the most significant character is heterogeny of pretarsal claws in males, which have different shapes on pro‐, mid‐ and/or metatarsi.…”

“…Certainly, the tribe Coccidulini needs thorough revision and comprehensive phylogenetic studies. Following the review of the genus Coccidula Kugelann, 1798 (Szawaryn et al 2021), here, as the next step in describing and understanding the diversity of the tribe, we provide a revision of the genus Adoxellus with detailed descriptions of the genus and its species supported by light and electron microscopy photos of morphological details. Crosby et al (1998).…”
