Revision of the femoralis group of Blepharoneura Loew (Diptera: Tephritidae)

Abstract: The femoralis species group of the genus Blepharoneura is revised. The following 42 species, including 32 new species, are recognized: amplihyalina, n. sp. (northwestern Argentina), apaapa, n. sp. (Bolivia), aspiculosa, n. sp. (Mexico), bidigitata, n. sp. (southern Brazil), bipunctata, n. sp. (Ecuador), biseriata Wulp (Mexico), bivittata, n. sp. (Nicaragua, Costa Rica), brevivittata, n. sp. (Costa Rica to Peru), chaconi, n. sp. (Costa Rica), cornelli, n. sp. (Costa Rica), cyclantherae, n. sp. (Mexico), femoral… Show more

“…Blepharoneura is a diverse genus (>100 species) of tephritid fruit flies with endophagous larvae that feed inside tissues of plants in the Cucurbitaceae (Condon & Norrbom, 1999;Condon et al, 2008b;Norrbom and Condon 2010). One especially diverse clade within Blepharoneura includes specialists that deposit eggs within the calyx tissue of flowers of species in a Neotropical subtribe of functionally dioecious species (Guraniinae) (Condon et al, 2008b).…”

“…There are seven species described in the genus Baryglossa. Blepharoneura is an endemic Neotropical genus and it is divided in two species groups (complexes): B. poecilosoma and B. femoralis that is estimated to include more than 200 species, most of which are undescribed (Norrbom and Condon, 2010). This genus has been extensively used for the study of host-use evolution and sympatric speciation (Condon and Norrbom, 1994).…”

“…Thus, distinct genetic lineages coexist in space: some sharing the same host parts, and some infesting different parts of the same host species (Condon et al, 2008;Marsteller et al, 2009). Members of this genus are divided in two species groups (complexes): B. poecilosoma and B. femoralis that are known to include 22 recently recognised species and estimated to include more than 200 species (Norrbom and Condon, 2010). The femoralis and poecilosoma groups can be diagnosed reliably only by morphological differences in genitalia.…”
