Review of Literature on Akkermansia muciniphila and its Possible Role in the Etiopathogenesis and Therapy of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

Abstract: Akkermansia muciniphila is a promising gut microbiota for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). A. muciniphila stimulates intestinal wall integrity, is an anti-inflammatory agent, and reduces endoplasmic reticulum stress, lipogenesis and gluconeogenesis. “…To explore the effects of CDs on glucose metabolism and gut microbiota, we established a mouse model of chronic CD exposure and added a probiotic supplementation group for comparison. Accumulating evidence reveals that several intestinal bacteria are beneficial for improving T2DM, such as Bifidobacterium , Lactobacillus , Bacillus , Streptococcus thermophilus , and Akkermansia , which can be used as probiotics. In this study, VSL#3 was selected for probiotic supplementation, which has been extensively studied and tested in animal models of intestinal inflammation and contains a high concentration (450 billion colonies/sachet) mixture of viable, lyophilized Bifidobacterium , Lactobacillus , and Bacillus thermophilus . , Mice treated with CDs are shown in Figure a.
