Review of Energy Efficiency Technologies in the Food Industry: Trends, Barriers, and Opportunities

Abstract: The industry sector has a significant responsibility for the depletion of fossil fuels and emission of carbon dioxide. Thus, several initiatives have been implemented by the industry sector to mitigate those issues. One initiative corresponds to the implementation of energy efficiency strategies. In particular, the food industry is heavily dependent on fossil fuels, and the food demand is expected to grow significantly in the coming years. Therefore, developing energy efficiency strategies for this particular … Show more

“…This observation corresponds with the results of comprehensive studies on the food industry, which state that a considerable amount of energy is required for evaporation and freezing processes [10]. Currently, most of this energy is generated using fossil fuels and the decarbonisation of these processes is key for a green transition of the industry [11].…”

“…Solar energy is suitable and effective for industrial processes and AcoD, as discussed in section VI, given process characteristics and biowaste produced in the FVPI is also a good technological option [22], [91]. Only few authors mention the integration of these technologies [92], [93] therefore discussing this proposed approach within the academic and industry community could open the way to discussion on its possible advantages and constraints.…”

“…The industrial sector is considered as an appropriate case for implementing DR programs, because of the large size of individual industrial buildings and their flexibility in many manufacturing processes. It means that electricity consumption in industrial buildings can be shifted from day to night if needed, however, it is not easy in residential and office buildings [8]. Load shifting in industrial buildings is more useful since it does not have an effect on the total amount of energy demand, but it affects load profile shape by moving part of energy consumption from one period to another period [9,10].…”
