Retrospective Study of Reported Adverse Events Due to Complementary Health Products in Singapore From 2010 to 2016

Abstract: The objective of this study is to collate and analyse adverse event reports associated with the use of complementary health products (CHP) submitted to the Health Sciences Authority (HSA) of Singapore for the period 2010–2016 to identify various trends and signals for pharmacovigilance purposes. A total of 147,215 adverse event reports suspected to be associated with pharmaceutical products and CHP were received by HSA between 2010 and 2016. Of these, 143,191 (97.3%) were associated with chemical drugs, 1,807 … Show more

“…Unexpectedly, not a single case of HILI was found in a retrospective study of adverse events due to complementary health products in Singapore from 2010 to 2016; adverse events were reported to the Health Sciences Authority, and analyzed were overall 147,215 adverse event reports suspected to be associated with pharmaceutical products and complementary health products, which included Chinese traditional medicines. 101 These data are at variance with another Singapore study of liver injury associated with CAM-a review of adverse event reports in an Asian community from 2009 to 2014, in which 10 assessable HILI cases provided weak RUCAM scores from 0 to 2 for 9 patients and a score of 5 for 1 patient. 56 In another report from Singapore, RUCAM was used in 15 HILI patients for causality assessment, whereby all cases reportedly fulfilled all RUCAM criteria but individual RUCAM-based causality gradings were not reported.…”

“…Of all the extracted ICSRs, 19.9% ICSRs were related to suspected cutaneous ADRs in the present analysis. Skin-related ADRs are common and contribute a major quantum of ADRs for both modern medicines and complementary health products ( Giardina et al, 2018 ; Xu et al, 2018 ). The lists of modern medicines causing various cutaneous ADRs have been available extensively in the literature and regularly updated through various sources of information that can guide clinicians in being careful while prescribing these drugs.…”

“…Health products are defined as any substance, preparation, or device intended for use by humans principally or entirely for a health-related purpose. They include pharmaceutical products, complementary health products, cosmetic products and medical devices (Xu et al, 2018) Pharmaceutical products are essential in maintaining human health and are a key factor in all healthcare systems. Global medicine consumption is increasing daily with more emphasis on rational use but the proportion of medicines left unused is still high.…”
