Retroperitoneal Schwannoma: An Atypical Presentation

Abstract: Schwannoma is a rare tumour arising from Schwann cells in myelinated neural sheath of the nerves. They can arise in various places like head, neck, extremities, adrenal, retro peritoneum, psoas muscle. We here present a case of 33-year-old male who came with features of acute pancreatitis, with incidentally detected mass in presacral region on ultrasonography. Investigations like CECT and MRI were suggestive of neurofibroma, radical excision of the mass was done which showed solitary encapsulated tumour and cu… Show more

“…They have homogeneous or heterogeneous appearance with areas of cystic degeneration (61-66% of cases) and calcifications (23% of cases) or hemorrhage at CT [2][3][4][5][6][7]. When CT showed a heterogeneous lesion, the tumor can mimic pheochromocytoma or other malignant tumors.…”

“…Zbog toga radiološko praćenje igra veoma važnu ulogu u definitivnom lečenju ovakvih pacijenata . U našem slučaju radilo se o benignim promenama (WHO gradus I), ali zbog mogućnosti recidiva, kao i maligne alteracije indikovano je šestomesečno praćenje pacijenta 6 .…”

“…The retroperitoneal region is an unusual location for schwannomas, with approximately 0.5–5% of all cases of schwannoma being retroperitoneal [2, 3]. Only patients with von Recklinghausen's disease have a stronger correlation with retroperitoneal schwannomas [2]. Retroperitoneal schwannomas are, on the whole, mostly benign but malignant tumors have also been reported [1].…”
