“…Many workers have claimed that following this deformation, a Late Oligocene extensional regime affected the area between 35 • and 39 • south latitude (Charrier et al, 2005;Folguera et al, 2009;Godoy et al, 1999;Jordan et al, 2001;Muñoz et al, 2000;Radic et al, 2002;Radic, 2010). This episode is registered in 27-19 Ma old volcanic and volcaniclastic sequences which constitute poorly differentiated arc and back-arc rocks deposited in the Cura Mallín basin, a series of interconnected depocenters that were filled diachronically Muñoz, 1996;Radic et al, 2002;Radic, 2010;Suárez and Emparán, 1995;Uliana, 1978).…”

“…In this period, there was also a shift to an extensional regime in the back-arc (Kay et al, 2006a;Folguera et al, 2009;Bermúdez et al, 1993). The Payenia basaltic lavas have mainly an intraplate signature, with no depletion in the HFSE typical of arc magmas (Kay et al, 2004;Kay, 2002), and it has been modeled as a result of 2-8% of partial melting of an enriched mantle source (Kay, 2002).…”

“…In the Quaternary Andean back-arc in western Argentina, between 35°S and 38°S, an intense volcanism was developed, mostly of alkaline basalts, in the Payenia Basaltic Province (Polanski, 1954), or simply 'Payenia', also named Andino-Cuyana Basaltic Province (Bermúdez and Delpino, 1989). Payenia is younger than 5 Ma, with an increase in the volcanic activity since 2 Ma, and it is the largest basaltic province of this age in the back-arc of South America, covering an area of 15,900 km 2 (Bermúdez et al, 1993;Folguera et al, 2009;Llambías et al, 2010). This province is divided into two basaltic fields: the Llancanelo Volcanic Field in the north, with an area of 10,700 km 2 , and the Payún Matrú Volcanic Field in the south, which covers an area of 5,200 km 2 (Bermúdez and Delpino, 1989;Bermúdez et al, 1993) (Fig.…”
