Surgical Outcome of Scleral Buckling Compared With Scleral Buckling With Vitrectomy for Treatment of Macula-off Retinal Detachment

“…In a review by Cowley et al, the risk factors for the development of PVR in descending order of significance were the use of vitrectomy in the management of detachment, the presence of preoperative PVR, preoperative choroidal detachment, and a large retinal area treated with cryopexy. 26 Other reported risk factors for PVR include vitreous hemorrhage, 27,28 intraocular inflammation, 27 giant retinal tears, 29,30 and loss of formed vitreous intraoperatively. 27 Because the presence of such factors could have influenced the decision of which procedure was performed, we limited the contribution of some of these factors by excluding patients with preoperative PVR or complicated retinal detachments, including recurrent or traumatic retinal detachments and giant retinal tears.…”
