Retinal Location of the Preferred Retinal Locus Relative to the Fovea in Scanning Laser Ophthalmoscope Images

Abstract: PRL position relative to the fovea can be reliably estimated by plotting the normal foveal fixation bivariate ellipse on undistorted SLO images of retinas in which the fovea is obscured as a result of the disease process.

“…Identifying foveal location in SLO images of retinas with macular degeneration is usually impossible [6]. Consequently, we estimated foveal location by measuring where subjects without vision loss placed the fixation stimulus relative to their optic disks.…”

“…Various methods have been applied by other investigators to compute the coincidence between the gaze points of multiple subjects [10,[23][24][25][26][27]. To quantify the spatial coincidence of the gaze points of all the subjects with valid eye samples, we calculated the area of the best-fit bivariate contour ellipse (BVCEA) [28,29], BVCEA has been used in the past to quantify fixation eye movement stability [2,29] …”

“…For both scotoma and control subjects, the fPRL (or foveal fixation) bivariate ellipse area and fPRL eccentricity were calculated as described previously. 11 Potential subjects were excluded from participation if they took medications that could affect arm or hand movements, if they had neuromuscular disorders that affected arm or hand movement, or if they failed to pass the Folstein Mini Mental test. All subjects provided written informed consent by means of a consent form approved by the Kansas City Veterans Administration Medical Center Internal Review Board.…”
