Rethinking male drinking: Traditional masculine ideologies, gender-role conflict, and drinking motives.

Abstract: The present study aims to contribute to the body of literature linking traditional masculine ideologies and drinking. Previous studies found that traditional masculine ideologies were associated with numerous negative outcomes such as alcohol consumption and drinking-related problems (R. O. de Visser & J. A. Smith, 2007, Alcohol consumption and masculine identity among young men. Psychology & Health, 22, 595-614. This study hypothesizes a theoretical path model suggesting that traditional masculine ideologies … Show more

“…However, surprisingly absent from this literature are investigations of the extent to which men’s heavy alcohol use may affect these relations. This is remarkable given the established interrelationships among masculinity, alcohol use, and intimate partner aggression in North American samples (Iwamoto, Corbin, Lejuez, and MacPherson, 2014; Leonard 2005; McCreary, Newcomb, and Sadava 1999; Towns, Parker, and Chase 2012; Uy, Massoth, and Gottdiener 2014). Although variability exists across countries, extant literature drawn from myriad countries indicates that alcohol consumption is positively associated with the perpetration of aggression (World Health Organization 2007).…”

“…Clarification may be offered to these findings in future research by assessing the relationship of different dimensions of Latina/o TGRB and motives for drinking. A small body of research considers drinking motives in relation to gender roles (e.g., Fugitt, Ham, & Bridges, 2017; Uy, Massoth, & Gottdiener, 2014), however this is an underdeveloped area of research among Latina/os.…”
