Polyphenols in Farm Animals: Source of Reproductive Gain or Waste?

Reproduction is a complex process that is substantially affected by environmental cues, specifically feed/diet and its components. Farm animals as herbivorous animals are exposed to a large amount of polyphenols present in their natural feeding system, in alternative feed resources (shrubs, trees, and agro-industrial byproducts), and in polyphenol-enriched additives. Such exposure has increased because of the well-known antioxidant properties of polyphenols. However, to date, the argumentation around the impacts of polyphenols on reproductive events is debatable. Accordingly, the intensive inclusion of polyphenols in the diets of breeding animals and in media for assisted reproductive techniques needs further investigation, avoiding any source of reproductive waste and achieving maximum benefits. This review illustrates recent findings connecting dietary polyphenols consumption from different sources (conventional and unconventional feeds) with the reproductive performance of farm animals, underpinned by the findings of in vitro studies in this field. This update will help in formulating proper diets, optimizing the introduction of new plant species, and feed additives for improving reproductive function, avoiding possible reproductive wastes and maximizing possible benefits.

Background Resveratrol is an antiaging, antioxidant, anti‐inflammatory, and insulin‐sensitizing natural polyphenolic compound. Growing evidence indicates that resveratrol has potential therapeutic effects in infertile women with diminished ovarian function, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), or endometriosis. However, only one clinical trial in women undergoing in vitro fertilization (IVF) cycles using resveratrol has ever been reported. This review focuses on the potential therapeutic effects of resveratrol on pregnancy and on its advantages and disadvantages in pregnancy outcomes during infertility treatment. Methods We performed a literature review to describe the known impacts of resveratrol on the ovary and endometrium. Results Resveratrol upregulates sirtuin (SIRT)1 expression in ovaries, which is associated with protection against oxidative stress. It leads to the activation of telomerase activity and mitochondrial function, improving ovarian function. In the endometrium, resveratrol downregulates the CRABP2‐RAR pathway leading to suppressing decidual and senescent changes of endometrial cells, which is essential for embryo implantation and placentation. Moreover, resveratrol may also induce deacetylation of important decidual‐related genes. Conclusions Resveratrol has potential therapeutic effects for improving ovarian function; however, it also has anti‐deciduogenic actions in uterine endometrium. In addition, its teratogenicity has not yet been ruled out; thus, resveratrol should be avoided during the luteal phase and pregnancy.

One of the causes of failure of zygote development is oxidative stress in the culture medium. Where oxidative stress can damage the structure and function of zygotes due to free radicals Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS). Moringa oleifera Lam contains antioxidant polyphenol compounds, flavonoid flavanols namely quercetin which is the most antioxidant content in Moringa leaves which is expected to fight excess ROS. The purpose of this study was to prove that the supplementation of Moringa oleifera Lam leaf nanoparticles to increase zygote cleavage in goat embryo culture in vitro. The research subjects used goat oocytes which were divided into 4 groups consisting of 1 control group and 3 treatment groups. Each group consisted of 31 samples. Control group K1 without Moringa leaf nanoparticle supplementation, treatment group I P1 Moringa leaf nanoparticle supplementation with a dose of 0.5 µM, treatment group II P2 supplementation of Moringa leaf nanoparticles with a dose of 1.0 µM, Treatment group III P3 supplementation with Moringa leaf 2.0 µM. Embryo culture was carried out in a 5% CO2 incubator, temperature 38.5ºC for 48 hours, then observed under an inverted microscope. The results show that there are significant differences with the value of p = 0.041 which means p <0.05. Supplementation of moringa leaf nanoparticles (Moringa oleifera Lam) can significantly increase zygote cleavage at embryo culture stage in vitro.
