Results of a multicenter study of the retrievable Tulip vena cava filter: Early clinical experience

Abstract: Precise placement of the Tulip filter is feasible by either access route and the device appears mechanically stable. Further observations are needed to confirm that safe filter removal is practical up to 10 days after its insertion.

“…They can be implanted during the acute period of DVT when the thrombus is likely to disengage, and retrieved when no longer necessary after reduction or lysis of the thrombus. [25][26][27] In the present study the rate of recurrence of pulmonary thromboembolism did not differ between the GTF and other permanent filters, and there were no major complications around the site of insertion.…”

“…On the other hand, worsening of femoral vein thrombosis due to poor activities after the surgery could have necessitated another deployment of a permanent filter. As to a retrievable IVC filter, it could be left in place as a permanent filter if these problems should occur (1). Owing to these drawbacks of temporary filters, we applied the retrievable IVC filter to the present case.…”

“…Otherwise, it may be used as a permanent filter if the need for filtering persists (1). The retrievable filter has advantages over permanent filters, because many patients only require filter protection for a short period of time, and long-term complications are not negligible in permanent filters including migration, strut fracture, and inferior vana caval (IVC) occlusion.…”

“…The incidence of insertion site thrombosis ranges from 2% to 5%. 81,84,85 Death has occurred during insertion of these devices, although infrequently. Rare complications that can pose significant morbidity and mortality are migration of the filter into the heart, penetration into vascular and gastrointestinal systems, and thrombosis resulting in phlegmasia.…”
