Background: Regular physical activity is vital for children's health, well-being, and development. However, evidence is scant about physical activity indicators for children and youth in Ethiopia. This study aimed to assess physical activity indicators among children and youth in Ethiopia.Methods: This study was conducted as part of the Active Healthy Kids Global Alliance's "Global Matrix 3.0" which included 49 countries. Data were collected from December 2017 to April 2018. The country research team included different disciplines related to physical activity. Data were retrieved from pre-reviewed literature, government policy documents, and an expert interview panel. Data were analyzed using the ten physical activity indicators for children and youth. The grading system was done through a harmonized process and the standard grading rubric of the Global Matrix 3.0 study ((A = ≥ 80%, B = 60%-79%, C = 40%-59%, D = 20%-39%, F = < 20%, INC = incomplete data).Results: For the overall physical activity indicator, 28% of children and youth in Ethiopia met the recommended physical activity of 60 min per day which resulted in a "D" grade. Likewise, the school and government indicator received a "D" grade. Almost 32% of schools in Ethiopia had access to infrastructures and multipurpose spaces for physical activity including outdoor play. The government policy partially existed in the non-communicable diseases agenda but had less focus on children and youth. The active play indicator scored the highest grade of "B." About 71% of children and youth were involved in active play for at least 2 h a day before, during, and after school. About 50% of children and youth were engaging in organized sport participation, and this indicator was graded a "C." Similarly, 48% of children and youth walked to and from school as a means of active transportation resulting in a "C" for this indicator. Three indicators (sedentary behavior, family and peers, and community and environment) were graded as an "F." Approximately 8% of children and youth were living in communities and environments that did not support opportunities for physical activity. Only 13% of children and youth spent less than 2 h per day in sedentary screen time. There was no adequate information to grade the physical fitness indicator.Conclusion: This study showed that Ethiopian's children and youth have received low grades for majority of physical activity indicators. Therefore, urgent actions should be taken by the government, policymakers, researchers, and key stakeholders to address the suggested priority areas.

Objectives. Mexico’s 2018 Report Card evaluates the opportunities available for Mexican children and youth to reach healthy levels of physical activity, sleep, and sedentary behavior. Methods. The Report Card is a surveillance system that gathers data from national surveys, censuses, government documents, websites, grey literature, and published studies to evaluate 16 indicators in four categories: Daily Behaviors; Physical Fitness; Settings and Sources of Influence; and Strategies and Investments. Data were compared to established benchmarks. Each indicator was assigned a grade from 1 – 10 (< 6 is a failing grade) or “incomplete” if data was insufficient/unavailable. Results. Daily Behavior grades were: Overall Physical Activity, 4; Organized Sport Participation, 5; Active Play, 3; Active Transportation, 5; Sleep, 7; and Sedentary Behavior, 3. Physical Fitness, received a 7. Settings and Sources of Influence grades were: Family and Peers, incomplete; School, 3; and Community and Environment, 4. Strategies and Investments were: Government Strategies, 6; and Non-Government Organizations, 2. Conclusion. Low grades in 11 of the 16 indicators indicate that schools, families, communities, and government need to work together to improve physical activity opportunities for children and youth in Mexico.

El objetivo del estudio fue analizar los cambios en la prevalencia de actividad física deportiva (AFD) en adolescentes mexicanos y la asociación de ésta con variables sociodemográficas y la AFD de sus padres o madres. Se trata de un estudio transversal y comparativo en el que se analizó la Encuesta Nacional de Uso del tiempo (ENUT) versiones 2002 y 2014, la cual se basa en una muestra representativa de toda la población mexicana con 12 años o más. Se seleccionó la información de adolescentes de 12 a 19 años (n = 11,795) y de sus padres (n = 8,161) o madres (n = 10,261). Por medio de un cuestionario se indagó sobre características sociodemográficas, la práctica de AFD y el tiempo destinado a ésta. Se estimaron frecuencias, estadísticos de Chi2, T de Student y modelos de regresión logística. En doce años la prevalencia de AFD de adolescentes aumentó de 44.0% a 55.6% (p < 0.001), aunque no cambió el tiempo destinado a realizarla (p = 0.250). Los adolescentes que eran mujeres, que tenían mayor edad, con padres y/o madres con menor escolaridad y que éstos no practicaran AFD tuvieron menor probabilidad de realizar AFD. La AFD reportada por los adolescentes se relacionó más con la AFD de sus padres que con la AFD de las madres. A pesar de que en 12 años aumentó la práctica de AFD reportada por adolescentes mexicanos, existen grupos con baja probabilidad de realizarla, en los cuales se pueden enfocar políticas y programas públicos diseñados a la promoción de estilos de vida activos.
