Audi tory Brainstem Implants were developed to partially restore the hearing capabilities of patients without cochlear nerves bilaterally. Aim: this paper aims to discuss the clinical and surgical findings of four ABI patients. Materials and method: four patients diagnosed with bilateral schwannomas received auditory brainstem implants (ABI) and had one of their tumors resected in the same surgical procedure. Clinical aspects, surgical technique, anatomic landmarks, and outcomes were analyzed. Results: the anatomic landmarks were identified in all four patients in relation to the foramina of Luschka. Two patients had CSF leaks. The electrodes were well positioned and hearing sensation was good enough to allow for sound recognition and assist patients perform lip reading. Conclusion: the outcomes observed in our patients were quite encouraging and offer great perspectives for those suffering from deep bilateral deafness and impaired central auditory pathways.Keywords: surgery, auditory brain stem implantation, neurofibromatosis type 2, results.original article Rev Bras Otorrinolaringol 2008;74(5):647-51.

® speech processor for cochlear implants was developed to improve how incoming acoustic sound is processed; this applies not only for new users, but also for previous generations of cochlear implants. Aim:To identify the contribution of this technology -the Nucleus 22 ® -on speech perception tests in silence and in noise, and on audiometric thresholds. Methods:A cross-sectional cohort study was undertaken. Seventeen patients were selected. The last map based on the Spectra ® was revised and optimized before starting the tests. Troubleshooting was used to identify malfunction. To identify the contribution of the Freedom ® technology for the Nucleus22 ® , auditory thresholds and speech perception tests were performed in free field in soundproof booths. Recorded monosyllables and sentences in silence and in noise (SNR = 0dB) were presented at 60 dBSPL. The nonparametric Wilcoxon test for paired data was used to compare groups. Results: Freedom® applied for the Nucleus22 ® showed a statistically significant difference in all speech perception tests and audiometric thresholds. Conclusion:The reedom ® technology improved the performance of speech perception and audiometric thresholds of patients with Nucleus 22 ® . ORIGINAL ARTICLEBraz J Otorhinolaryngol. 2012;78(2):11-5. There is a great difficulty in determining earlier on which children would benefit or not from cochlear implants, especially because of their young age, the responses they give are very subtle. Aim: To compare results obtained through video-recording of the interactions of children who may receive a cochlear implant with the results obtained through evaluation protocols. Method: Seven children, with an average age of 39.7 months, with profound hearing loss were selected for the study. IT-MAIS and MUSS questionnaires were given to their parents/guardians of these children and the results were compared with the observation of the videorecordings. Results: It was possible to observe that the data is compatible with the auditory stages. However, the MUSS questionnaire data gathered during playful activities is very different . The questionnaire only takes into consideration the use of verbal language and therefore the majority of the evaluated children inevitably score low. Conclusion: Observing children play allows us to trace a better profile of linguistic behavior and aspects relative to language, that may presented differences in the questionnaire.
