Response of maize (Zea mays L.) to combined application of organic and inorganic (soil and foliar applied) fertilizers

Abstract: This was also similar to the combined application of pm at 2.5t ha-1 mixed with NPK 30 kgN ha-1 and foliar fertilizer. The results of the study indicated that combined application of pm, NPK and ff enhanced the growth and yield of maize. This integrated application will be a good soil management practice for tropical soils. Combination of pm at 2.5 t ha-1 with NPK 30 kgN ha-1 and foliar fertilizer (boost xtra) is therefore recommended for early maturing maize production in the study area.

“…It might be due to quick availability of nutrients especially phosphorous, which plays a crucial role in initiating primordia for the reproductive part of the plants. These results are in consistence with Prasad (2019) and Afe et al (2015). A similar trend was also observed for days to 50% silking.…”

“…Grain yield is the final result of many complex morphological and physiological processes taking place during the growth and development of crops [24]. The application of organics alone or in combination with mineral fertilizers led to increased maize grain yield compared to the control.…”

“…The integration of organic and inorganic fertilizers might have resulted into synergy and improved synchronization between nutrient release and uptake by plants leading to higher yields [25]. According to Vanlauwe et al [26] and Afe et al [24], the production of grain yield might be due to better growth, development and dry matter accumulation with proper supply of nutrients to plant and increase in the availability of other plant nutrients with the respective source of nitrogen application or extra crop produce can often be observed due to positive direct or indirect interactions between fertilizer and organic inputs as suggested by Magda et al [27]. The inorganic fertilizer provides most of the nutrients and the organic fertilizer increases soil physicochemical properties [17].…”

“…To date, foliar supply of nutrients and biostimulants has been little explored in maize, often focusing on low input management systems in developing countries [13][14][15][16]. However, foliar application of nutrients and biostimulants during critical phenological stages and plant conditions has great application potential in intensive agricultural systems as well.…”
