Response of Grassland Degradation to Drought at Different Time-Scales in Qinghai Province: Spatio-Temporal Characteristics, Correlation, and Implications

Abstract: Grassland, as the primary vegetation on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, has been increasingly influenced by water availability due to climate change in last decades. Therefore, identifying the evolution of drought becomes crucial to the efficient management of grassland. However, it is not yet well understood as to the quantitative relationship between vegetation variations and drought at different time scales. Taking Qinghai Province as a case, the effects of meteorological drought on vegetation were investigated.… Show more

“…However, most studies did not consider the phenomenon of water and heat synchronization when analysing the NDVI-climate relationship, so the results need to be verified [13,41,42,54]. In addition, in the study of the meteorological drought index, most studies did not take into account the phenomenon of rain and heat occurrence during the same period [56][57][58][59], and whether the meteorological drought index also had the same periodicity should be considered. So, when exploring the NDVI-climate relationship, we should first analyse the climate types of the region to avoid the impact of rain and heat occurrence during the same period.…”

“…We estimated the values of Kendall inclination β and the Z statistics. β is an unbiased estimate for long-term trends, when β > 0, the sequence shows a significant upward trend; when β = 0, the sequence shows no significant trend; and when β < 0, the sequence shows a significant downward trend [41]. Based on the Z values from MK test, when Z > 1.96, the results have significant increasing; when Z < −1.96, the results have significant decreasing; and when −1.96≤Z≤1.96, the results have non-significant changes.…”

“…Above-ground deciduous tree biomass for Mediterranean forests correlated significantly (r = 0.55 and 0.67, respectively) with the September and December SPEI [28] for Mediterranean forests, and it was shown that the interannual variability of above-ground tree (evergreen) mass in the Swiss Alps was also correlated with SPEI [29]. In terms of grassland above-ground mass, correlation has been reported between the 3, 6, 12, and 24 month timescale SPEI and grassland production in China [30], and it was shown that the monthly scale SPEI for July through September was better related to biomass production for grasslands and shrublands than SPEIs at other timescales [31]. However, Reference [32] assessed the SPEI's sensitivity to drought for six grasslands in the central US, and found no statistically significant relationships.…”
