“…Based on the generally available data, the assessment of TSFs can be viewed as brownfield exploration [47]. Environmental and/or social aspects can also influence tailings valorisation [54]. The state of target minerals can alter in relatively short time spans due to their exposition to biological, chemical and physical processes of the Earth's surface [15].…”

“…The consequences of waste disposal are considered as one of the significant sources of environmental pollution as many of these pollutants are toxic and can cause significant damage to the environment. Further, the harmful impact of some pollutants (e.g., copper, mercury) take a longer period of time to become visible, often after the mining sites are abandoned following the conclusion of the mining operations ( Sözen et al, 2017). Hence, in this project, we prepared a questionnaire that sets out a hypothetical case study portraying waste disposal practice, initiatives and subsequent disclosures of a large company in the context of the mining industry.…”

“…Desulphurization succeeded in reducing the sulfur content to less than 0.4 wt% in the tailings, a non-acid generating material. The rehabilitation strategy of resource recovery (the tailings would be processed for copper recovery) followed by lime stabilization was investigated to further prevent the chemical mobility of heavy metals before final landfilling (Sozen et al, 2017). Sulfide-lean benign tailings obtained from a two-stage flotation process were evaluated as materials to reduce the permeability of acid-generating coal interburden or waste rock (Kotsiopoulos and Harrison, 2017 The effects of coal ash on acid coal mine waste and AMD were investigated in the field by adding coal ash to acid waste and supplying essential nutrients to plants .…”
