Resistance to Vancomycin, LY333328, Ciprofloxacin and Trovafloxacin of Community-Acquired and Nosocomial Strains of Enterococcus faecalis Isolated in Badajoz (Spain) with and without High-Level Resistance to Streptomycin and Gentamicin

Abstract: In vitro resistance of community-acquired and nosocomial strains of Enterococcus faecalis isolated in Badajoz (Spain) were determined by a microdilution method. The isolates were identified with conventional MicroScan Pos Combo 4 I dehydrated panels. No resistance to glycopeptides was found, but LY333328 was 2–4 times more active than vancomycin. In the nosocomial strains, high-level resistance to streptomycin (HLRS) was 54.7%, and high-level resistance to gentamicin (HLRG) was 38.1%. Resistance to ciprofloxac… Show more

“…Its activity against enterococci is not affected by the presence of vanA-, vanB-, or vanC-mediated vancomycin resistance 10,[12][13][14][15][16][20][21][22][23][24][25][26][27] or aminoglycoside resistance. 28 Its activity against pneumococci and viridans streptococci is not affected by the presence of intermediate-or high-level penicillin resistance. 11,15,16,19,20 In addition, the presence of methicillin resistance does not affect the activity of oritavancin against Staphylococcus aureus or coagulase-negative staphylococci.…”

“…patients showing relapse/treatment failure, compulsory withdrawal of isoniazid and rifampicin, TB meningitis, HIV-infected TB patients receiving protease inhibitors, and certain cases of multidrug resistant TB [4] . In addition, among aminoglycosides it is associated with the least resistance and exhibits no cross-resistance to other aminoglycosides [5] . Therefore, it is desirable to explore the means of delivering streptomycin by the oral route.…”
