“…MDD is a heterogeneous disorder that can be divided into subtypes based on symptoms and biotypes based on functional connectivity. With 227 different combinations of symptoms, the Research Diagnostic Criteria divides MDD into 11 different subtypes and has shown that there are differences in treatment outcomes based on subtype (Prusoff et al., 1980 ; van Loo et al., 2012 ). Two to four biotypes of MDD have been described in the literature through machine learning and resting‐state fMRI (Drysdale et al., 2017 ).…”

“…Problems with conceptual clarity in this arena also make it difficult to evaluate the predictive validity of using any of these classification systems for deciding how to treat late-life depression (e.g., with medication or psychotherapy or both). Work by Prusoff, Weissman, Klerman, and Rounsaville (1980), which addresses this issue in younger depressives, is particularly relevant here. More research on the validity and reliability of appropriate measurement tools is needed before we can be convinced of the utility of this construct in the treatment of elderly depressed patients.…”

“…As noted previously, however, their solicited patients responded to feature articles rather than ads, and it is less clear whether they might have already been considering treatment. The possible relevance of differences in presence of precipitating events is suggested by the finding (Prusoff, Weissman, Klerman, & Rounsaville, 1980) This document is copyrighted by the American Psychological Association or one of its allied publishers.…”

“…As noted previously, however, their solicited patients responded to feature articles rather than ads, and it is less clear whether they might have already been considering treatment. The possible relevance of differences in presence of precipitating events is suggested by the finding (Prusoff, Weissman, Klerman, & Rounsaville, 1980) that the Research Diagnostic Criteria diagnosis of situational versus nonsituational depression has implications for treatment response. Although patients with a situational depression responded to all three active treatments (interpersonal therapy alone, pharmacotherapy alone, and combined interpersonal therapy and pharmacotherapy), patients with a nonsituational depression responded to combined treatment only, with pharmacotherapy alone or interpersonal therapy alone resulting in an outcome that was no better than the nonscheduled treatment control condition.…”
