Process skills are an important aspect of learning science. Scientific process skills help students to develop creativity in learning. Process skills such as observing, formulating questions, interpreting, experimenting, hypothesizing, applying concepts, and communicating. This study aims to analyze the need for development resources needs of science filled with science process skills. Requirement analysis of the development of teaching materials with the skill of the process of science needs to be done because the textbook is the reference a teacher in the class. The subjects matter of chemistry the study was three senior high schools in Sambas, West Borneo. Needs analysis conducted using a qualitative approach, in terms of needs in classroom learning and content of process skills on teaching materials. Data were collected by interviews and questionnaires were analyzed descriptively. The results showed that as many as 27 percents of students perceive the book used in learning has not yet trained the science process skills. As many as 73 percents of students perceive that they need instructional materials in the form of inquiry-based chemistry modules to improve science process skills. Modules are developed based guided inquiry for having guided inquiry learning stages that can practice students' science process skills.

Secondary School Students’ Mastery of Integrated Science Process Skills in Siaya County, Kenya

The study investigated secondary school students' mastery of Integrated Science Process Skills (ISPS) among co-educational schools and the influence of grade level, gender, and school location in Siaya County, Kenya. The study used a causal-comparative design with purposive sampling technique. A 30-item Test of Integrated Science Process Skill (TISPS) developed by Kazeni (2005) was administered. The instrument assesses the skills of controlling variables, defining operationally, formulating hypotheses, experimenting and interpreting data. The instrument was administered to 429 students, 117, 108, 101 and 103 in grades 9, 10, 11 and 12 respectively drawn from one urban co-educational school (n = 215) and one rural co-educational school (n = 214). The data were analyzed by grade level using one-way ANOVA and by gender and school location using an independent sample t-test. The findings indicated moderate mastery of ISPS and statistically significant grade level differences between grades 9 and 10, 10 and 11, 11 and 12, 9 and 11, 9 and 12, and 10 and 12; Gender differences in favor of boys and school location differences in favor of urban school students in mastery of ISPS. The following conclusions are made with regard to integrated science process skills: Mastery of ISPS increases with grade level; boys have a higher mastery of ISPS than girls; the urban school has a higher mastery of ISPS than the rural school. Implications for practice and further research are herein explicated.

Science process skills could not be separated from the process of conceptual understanding in teaching-learning of science and applied science. The skills needed to be identified and discussed as skills which were implementable in many subjects. The assessment on students' skills was influenced not only by the ability to use these skills, but also by the knowledge of a particular subject in which the skills were used. The aim of this study was to analyse students' science process skills by using Testlet instrument. The science process skills were analysed from 226 students studying in three different schools. The Testlet instrument in this study was designed in the form of multiple choices. The indicators of science process skills in this study consisted of conceptual knowledge, observation, controlling variable, interpreting data and drawing conclusions. The results obtained in this study were that the students' completeness on conceptual knowledge was 71%, on observation was 39.7%, on controlling variable was 29.4%, on interpreting data was 35.7%, and on drawing conclusion was 29.7%.
