Report of Two Cases of Idiopathic Hemorrhagic Sarcoma (Kaposi), the First Complicated With Lymphatic Leukemia

Abstract: The subject of idiopathic hemorrhagic sarcoma of Kaposi has already been written about from many standpoints, and to date quite a large number of cases have been reported. They have been reviewed so thoroughly in the articles of Gilchrist and Ketron,1 and in that of Hazen,2 that we feel that it would be superfluous to mention these reviews except in connection with the cases relevant to conditions in the patients we wish to report. “…The first report of an association between KS and a lymphoproliferative disorder (LD) dates back approximately 80 years. In 1920 Cole and Crump described the coexistence of KS and chronic lymphocytic leukemia in the same patient1; later, in 1933, Lane and Greenwood reported the onset of KS in a patient with mycosis fungoides 2. A large number of reports of other associations followed3–10 but, although the well known article published by Safai et al in 1980 is among the most frequently cited in the literature because of the significance of its data (18 of 92 KS patients also had LDs), the results collected in various studies of large series of homogeneous patient populations with nonepidemic KS have not always been concordant (Table 1).…”

“…For patients with KS, SPMs as well as multicentric KS in other sites are reportedly serious complications [10,28]. Based on our literature review, the first case of SPM (lymphatic leukemia) in a patient with KS was reported in 1920 [32]. Subsequently, SPMs associated with KS were debated in 1954 [9].…”

“…In 1920, Cole and Crump [51] described the first case of a patient presenting with chronic lymphocytic leukemia and KS. Other lymphoproliferative neoplasms reported with concurrent KS include non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL), Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) and chronic myeloid leukemia [52].…”
