Replicated association of the single nucleotide polymorphism in EDG1 with marbling in three general populations of Japanese Black beef cattle

Abstract: BackgroundMarbling, defined by the amount and the distribution of intramuscular fat and measured as beef marbling score (BMS), is an economically important trait of beef cattle in Japan. We recently reported that a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP), namely, c.-312A>G, in the endothelial differentiation, sphingolipid G-protein-coupled receptor, 1 (EDG1) gene was associated with the BMS level in the Japanese Black beef cattle population of Oita prefecture, with the G allele being associated with a high level … Show more

“…Many QTLs for the growth-related trait are thought to be fixed for favorable alleles in the Kagoshima prefecture population [8]. We should note that the female population in Japanese Black cattle of the Niigata prefecture possesses the favorable allele (G allele) frequency at the c.1326T>G SNP, which is comparable to the data observed in the Kagoshima prefecture population [7].…”

“…Of the significant SNPs for Marb, five SNPs were detected within a 19.2 Mb segment (between 61.5 Mb and 80.7 Mb) on BTA7. Twelve SNPs were located within the Marb QTL regions that were reported in previous studies [13,18,20]. Nine SNPs were harbored within the regions of known genes (Table 9).…”

“…Nine SNPs were harbored within the regions of known genes (Table 9). In particular, one SNP, Hapmap39048-BTA-99764 was located within EDG1 gene on BTA3, which was reported to be a positional function candidate gene responsible for marbling [20]. …”
