Renewed Single Crystal Study of Ce₃Al₁₁

Abstract

We report a study on a single crystal of the ordered heavy fermion compound Ce 3 Al 11 grown by Al-flux. Three transitions are observed. A ferromagnetic one at T C = 6.2 K which is followed by an antiferromagnetic one at T N = 3.4 K and a third one at T 1 = 2.7 K. This lower one has not been reported before. It's origin is unknown, and unlike the other two the transition is of first order type. We infer the appearance of the T 1 transition to a smaller unit-cell volume of our samples which acts like hydrostatic pressure.
