Renal duplication anomalies in the fetus: clues for prenatal diagnosis

Abstract: Duplex kidneys are one of the most common major congenital abnormalities of the urinary tract. The antenatal diagnosis of duplex kidney and its associated ureterocele is infrequent. We report on our experience with the prenatal diagnosis of duplex kidneys in seven fetuses over the past 24 months. In all fetuses, the sagittal length of the duplex kidney was above the 95th centile for gestational age. A 'cyst-like' structure in the upper pole of the duplex kidney and a ureterocele in the urinary bladder were pre… Show more

“…It is even possible to differentiate between ectopic ureter and ureterocele. 3,4 This may lead to the discovery of more cases of fetal renal duplications amenable to neonatal management. The present article deals with the estimation of the renal function of this pathological duplex kidney.…”

“…3 Detection of 2 separate poles or ureterocele are the strongest predictors of duplex renal units with predictive power of 93% and 78%, respectively. 4 Antenatal ultrasound with a duplex kidney may only show cystic dysplasia, leading to unclear differentiation between masses of renal and suprarenal origin.…”

“…As a consequence, detailed examination of the hydronephrotic kidney initially reveals a duplex collecting system. [8][9][10] However, the definitive prenatal diagnosis relies on the confident identification of the dilated distal ureter protruding into the bladder, which produces a characteristic balloonlike appearance called the "bladder into the bladder" sign or the "Foley catheter" sign. 11…”
