Eng Sanit Ambient | v.22 n.1 | jan/fev 2017 | 123-132 RESUMONo presente estudo avaliou-se a remoção de demanda bioquímica de oxigênio (DBO), nitrogênio total (N T ) e fósforo total (P T ) da água residuária de suinocultura (ARS) em sistemas alagados construídos (SACs) de escoamento horizontal subsuperficial, além da contribuição das espécies vegetais cultivadas: Polygonum punctatum (erva-de-bicho) e Chrysopogon zizanioides (capim-vetiver). Foram implantados três SACs, utilizando-se argila expandida como meio suporte, sendo um cultivado com P. punctatum (SAC E ), outro cultivado com C. zizanioides (SAC V ) e um mantido como controle, sem cultivo (SAC C ). Para um tempo de retenção hidráulica nominal (τ) de 3,2 dias, observou-se remoção de DBO, N T e P T , ao longo do período experimental, com eficiências médias de 85, 38 e 51% (SAC C ), 89, 48 e 69% (SAC E ) e 81, 36 e 45% (SAC V ), respectivamente. O melhor desempenho foi observado no SAC E .Foram obtidas, em termos de matéria seca, produtividades de 2, 79 e 1,91 g m -2 d -1 e remoções de N T de 1,54 e 1, 01% e de P T de 0,81 e 1, 19%, da carga aplicada, para a erva-de-bicho e o capim-vetiver, respectivamente. INTRODUÇÃOA produção em escala intensiva de carne suína, por meio do confinamento de animais, pode ser considerada uma atividade importante no contexto da economia de diversos estados brasileiros. Considerando-se as particularidades das granjas suinícolas, os produtores brasileiros têm tratado as águas residuárias de suinocultura (ARS) em sistemas de baixo custo, como digestores anaeróbios e lagoas de estabilização. Using a nominal hydraulic retention time (τ) of 3.21 days, theaverage removal efficiencies of BOD, N T and P T obtained were 85, 38 e 51% (CW C ), 89, 48 e 69% (CW E ) and 81, 36 e 45% (CW V ), respectively. The best performance was observed on CW E . The dry mass productivities were 2. 79 and 1.91 g m -2 d -1 . N T removals were 1.54 and 1. 01% and P T removals were 0.81 and 1. 19%, respectively for Polygonum punctatum and Chrysopogon zizanioides.

Constructed wetlands (CWs) are receiving a renewed attention as a viable phytotechnology for treating agricultural wastewaters and for the removal of more specific pollutants, in particular recalcitrant ones. In this work, the performance of CW mesocosms using light expanded clay aggregates (LECA) as the bed's substrate and planted with Phragmites australis was investigated for treatment of olive mill wastewater (OMW), swine wastewater (SW) contaminated with oxytetracycline and water contaminated with herbicide MCPA (2-methyl-4-chlorophenoxyacetic acid). Both wastewaters (OMW and SW) initially presented high organic matter content and total suspended solids which were removed by the system with efficiencies higher than 80%. Removal of polyphenols in OMW and nitrogen compounds in SW also showed similar or higher efficiencies in comparison with other treatment systems reported in the literature. The antibiotic oxytetracycline was completely removed from SW within the assay period in unplanted LECA beds, but planted beds allowed a significantly faster removal. In regard to water contaminated with MCPA, the results showed that LECA has a large sorption capacity for this herbicide (removal efficiencies of 56-97%). In general, considerably higher pollutant removal efficiencies were obtained when plants were used (up to 28% higher). This study examined a novel reuse of alum sludge, an inescapable by-product of drinking water treatment process when aluminium salt is added as a coagulant, as the main medium in a laboratory-scale multi-stage constructed wetland (CW) system for reject water treatment. Such reject water is a main concern in municipal wastewater treatment plant (MWWTP) for increasing the organic and nutrient loading. A ‘tidal flow’ strategy was employed to enhance the wetland aeration to stimulate organic matters (OM) and ammoniacal-nitrogen (N) oxidation while the ‘step feed’ operation was adopted to supply the necessary amount of carbon source for denitrification. The results reveal that alum sludge acting as P adsorbent can secure the P removal. Meanwhile, high removals of N and OM can also be obtained due to the active bacteria growth on the alum sludge surface. The results show that average removal efficiencies of 65.4 ± 12.3% for chemical oxygen demand (COD), 67.8 ± 9.2% for five-day biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5), 33.6 ± 17.0% for N and 99.5 ± 0.49% for P can be achieved over a period of 190 days. This indicates that novel reuse of alum sludge as medium in CW system can provide a promising approach for reject water treatment. Therefore, it will significantly reduce the amount of pollutant feedback through reject water recycling in a MWWTP.
