REM syndrome (reticular erythematous mucinosis): report of a further case or variant of it

Abstract: A 50-year-old woman had cervical lymphadenopathy, swollen and waxy-looking gums, and a diamond-shaped, reticular erythematous eruption on her back of eight years' duration. Histologic examination of the gingival tissue and skin showed round-cell infiltration around the small blood vessels and in the upper part of the dermis, and an extensive eosinophilic amorphous deposit throughout the dermis that stained with Alcian blue. The clinical and histologic features, although not identical, resembled those reported … Show more

“…From 31 cases (32.6%) for whom IF was performed, 21 (22.1%) were negative and 10 (10.5%) were positive, without a specific pattern. 6,9,12,14,15,17,19,21,2629,36,38 A few papers provided immunohistochemistry (IHQ) information that indicated a predominance of CD4+ lymphocytes 18,38 (Table 2).…”

“…Photosensitivity is often noticed 1,3 and sunlight exposure has been reported to induce new lesions or to aggravate the condition and produce symptoms of burning and pruritus 5,6 . However, in several cases it has been difficult to produce the eruption by phototesting with ultraviolet (UV)‐B and UV‐C in previously uninvolved areas 7–9 . REM may be associated with a variety of systemic disorders, especially autoimmune diseases such as discoid lupus erythematosus, idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura and diabetes mellitus 4,8,10 .…”
