University students are predisposed to stress, which could be even higher in Nursing students since they are directly related to the COVID-19 pandemic given their health training and area of knowledge. Our purpose was to assess the stress levels of Nursing students before and during lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Murcia (Spain), its influence on taking an online exam and how it was affected by physical exercise. This was an observational and prospective study including Nursing students from the second year of the Nursing Degree from 3 February to 23 April 2020. Three measurements were performed: one before lockdown and two during lockdown. Stress increased substantially during lockdown. Financial, family or emotional problems, as well as physical exercise, also increased. Indeed, at 40 days of lockdown, those students with financial, family or emotional problems, and less physical exercise reported significantly higher stress levels. In addition, those who passed the online exam had lower stress levels compared to those who failed. In conclusion, during lockdown, stress in Nursing students increased. This could be triggered by students’ personal problems, and physical exercise may be used as a way to reduce stress. Academic performance was better in those students reporting less stress.

Differences in study workload stress and its associated factors between transfer students and freshmen entrants in an Asian higher education context

Unlike the studies of freshmen entrants, the learning experiences of community college transfer (CCT) students in the receiving university is a topic that has only started to gain attention in recent decades. Little is known about the differences between CCT and freshmen entrants with regard to their study workload stress and its relationship with their perceptions of the teaching and learning environment, approaches to learning, self-efficacy and generic skills. The purpose of our study was to address this gap. This was a cross-sectional survey study conducted from April 2018 to November 2018 in a university in Hong Kong. The HowULearn questionnaire was adapted to local usage and validated for data collection. In total, 841 CCT students and 978 freshmen entrants completed the survey. The respondents were aged between 19 and 52 years (mean = 21.6, SD = 1.92), and 66.0% were women. The HowULearn questionnaire was determined by factor analyses to have eight factors. The reliabilities of the eight factors were found to be acceptable (Cronbach alphas = 0.709-0.918). The CCT students scored significantly higher than the freshmen entrants for perceived study workload stress and surface approaches to learning, but lower on teaching for understanding & encouraging learning, peer support, and self-efficacy beliefs. The surface approach to learning, deep & organized studying, alignment & constructive feedback, and generic skills were found to be predictors of study workload stress in both groups of students, and in the overall student data. This study has shown that CCT students and freshmen entrants differed with regard to their study workload stress and learning experiences. Our findings provide a message, both for educators in higher education and policy makers in the government-there is not a one-size-fits-all approach to different student populations when it comes to enhancing their learning experiences.

Background: University training in nursing together with other student variables can increase the risk of anxiety in students. It is important to assess the student's level of anxiety, which can have repercussions on their training and mental health. There are several validated tools such as the generalized anxiety disorder scale (GAD-7).Objective: To know which factors are associated with the appearance of anxiety and which protect against it in university nursing students.Method: A cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out in which 170 university nursing students from University of Jaén participated. A bivariate and multivariate analysis was performed, calculating odds ratio and adjusted odds ratio (aOR) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) to determine which factors were associated with a higher score on the GAD-7 questionnaire, and therefore with the presence of anxiety.Results: In total, 66.5% (113) of the students have suffered an anxiety crisis on some occasion and 48.8% (83) of the students did not carry out activities of any kind to control anxiety and stress. Practicing religious and spiritual beliefs increased the probability of having anxiety compared to those who did not have religious beliefs (aOR = 3.92; 95% CI = 1.09, 14.08), as well as having previously suffered an anxiety crisis (aOR = 5.13; 95% CI = 2.39, 11.04). Protective factors against anxiety appear to be second-year students (aOR = 0.33; 95% CI = 0.16, 0.72) and being deeply satisfied with the teaching staff (aOR = 0.03; 95% CI = 0.01, 0.79).
