Relaxivity control of magnetic nanoclusters for efficient magnetic relaxation switching assay

Abstract: 50 nm Magnetic nanocluster (MNC) was deliberately selected as an efficient probe for the magnetic relaxation switching (MRSw) assay. After surface modification of MNCs with poly(acrylic acid) to give PAA-MNCs, and employing streptavidin-biotin interactions for the MRSw assay model, a few tenths pM concentration of strepavidin could be determined.

“…Significant values of r 2 (>500 mM −1 s −1 ) are obtained regardless of the size of the MNP used (from 6 to 16 nm), the type of organization, or the chemical route (CP, TD, polyol) adopted to prepare the magnetic nanoparticles. This observation clearly demonstrates the primacy of the total magnetic moment of assembly over the nanoparticle alone [20,26,30,31,36,38,39,41,49,74,75]. Optimal d H values are in a wide range between 70 and 250 nm depending on the systems considered.…”

“…In MAR, the relaxivity is a function of d H 2 and increases with the outer sphere diameter assimilated to d H . In SDR, the relaxivity has reached a maximum and is independent of the outer sphere diameter [28,49]. Finally, when the d H increases too much, transverse relaxivity is described by ELR.…”

“…Therefore, the water protons were not in an inhomogeneous magnetic field, similar to free water molecules resulting in an increase in T 2 . This is known as static dephasing mode (SD mode) [33], with a corresponding increase in the T 2 of water [11,13]. The change in T 2 (ΔT 2 ) increased up to a plateau with increased Cd 2+ concentration (Fig.3).…”

“…Since DEVD can be recognized and cleaved by caspase‐3, the DEVD‐blended MCSPs were dissembled when using caspase‐3; this process could be detected with an increase in T 2 . Additionally, Yoon and Lee's group studied the change trend of T 2 when the as‐prepared MCSPs were assembled through the streptavidin‐biotin interaction 87. A series of PAA‐stabilized MCSPs were solvothermally synthesized and showed the controlled particle sizes from 15, 30 to 50 nm, which corresponded to an increase in r 2 from 247, 340 and 364 mM −1 s −1 , respectively.…”
