Relative density correlations are not reliable criteria

Abstract: The concept of relative density was developed with the intention of appropriately defining looseness and denseness of sand or sand–gravel soils in a meaningful way; however, there are sufficient amounts of research and case studies to demonstrate the unreliability of this concept due to its large inherent errors. Nevertheless, this parameter found its way early on as a ground improvement acceptance criterion based on the same philosophy that led to its formation. As there was general agreement among engineers … Show more

“…Relative density D R is a key parameter controlling the cyclic strength and strain accumulation of sand-like soils and one of the primary input parameters of PM4Sand. This parameter has been estimated using CPT-based correlations, whose uncertainties have been studied (e.g., Jamiolkowski et al 2003;Hamidi et al 2013).…”

“…There is a considerable amount of study to indicate the unreliability of this description due to its fallibility. Hamidi et al (2013) emphasized that there is great inaccuracy associated with relative density correlations.…”
