Relationships among structural computing and other fields

Abstract: We describe the field of structural computing as it relates to a number of other pursuits. By doing this, we hope to accomplish several goals. First, we identify issues that are under-or misrepresented in other research areas-issues that we feel may form the beginnings of a core research agenda for structural computing. Second, we identify points of the structural computing agenda that are as of yet unclear or not yet fully articulated. Third, we point to natural academic allies of the structural computing fie… Show more

“…Existing hypermedia solutions have been challenged by more recent approaches such as structural computing where structure is treated as a first-class citizen and the focus is no longer on the data [11]. As we show in the next section, our model treats data, navigational as well as structural metadata at the same level.…”

“…For example, HyperReal [16] is a mixed reality model that introduces the concept of map components for managing geographical data. In addition, existing hypermedia solutions have also been challenged by new ideas such as the structural computing approach that treats structure as a first-class citizen and no longer puts the focus on the data [17].…”

“…This research has resulted in innovative, but not easily usable services. These systems have never had the opportunity to meet global adoption and usage [1]. One significant reason for this phenomenon is that any hypermedia-unaware third-party developer faces several difficulties when the time comes to integrate hypermedia services into his own existing system [2].…”
