Relationship between total body water and surface area in normal and obese subjects

Abstract: SYNOPSIS Total body water was measured using tritium in 30 males and 30 females. It was found that total body water could be predicted from height and weight, and formulae for both males and females have been produced with multiple correlation coefficients (r) of 0 95 and 0-96 respectively. The predicted total body water was found to be very closely related to the predicted surface area giving correlation coefficients (r) for males and females of 0 997 and 0-985 respectively.

“…This con®rms that the SA:Z ratio is an accurate predictor of TBW in obese children (Battistini et al, 1992). The accuracy of the SA:Z ratio is to be attributed in part to the close relationship which exists between SA and TBW in obese subjects (Hume and Weyers, 1971).…”

“…Human measures have subsequently been suggested, and have been derived from HT and TBW [30], skinfold thickness [31], density testing (underwater weighing) [31,32] and total body potassium [32]. Many other estimates of FFM have used bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) in combination with height, TBW and sex [33][34][35].…”

“…Слід підкреслити, що існують формули щодо визначення обсягів ЗВ залежно від антропометрич-них даних людини без застосування інструменталь-них методів [9,10]. Вони розроблені наприкінці Оригінальні дослідження /Original Researches/ минулого сторіччя іноземними дослідниками.…”
