Background: College students appear more vulnerable in developing a dependence on the internet. Individuals with hikikomori are frequently reported to have social contact predominantly via the internet. Objectives: To find the prevalence of Internet addiction, gaming Addiction, Hikikomori Trait and Insomnia amongst medical undergraduates and to study their association with various determinants. Methodology: The present Cross-Sectional study was conducted among first to final-year medical students studying at various medical colleges in Indian City from February to May 2021. Data collection was done after obtaining the ethical permission of the Institute. A total of 400 students who gave consent were sent an electronic questionnaire. Results: The mean age of study participants was 20 ± 1.58 years. Internet addiction was present in 189(47.2%) participants, gaming addiction in 128 (32%) students and Hikikomori Trait was found in 98(24.5%) students. There was a statistically significant association between different grades of insomnia and internet, gaming addiction, and hikikomori trait (<?0.0001) in the present study. Conclusion: Internet addiction was present in almost half of the medical students while gaming addiction was seen in nearly one third of the students. Male gender and hostel stay had a statistically significant association with internet addiction, gaming addiction, insomnia and hikikomori trait.

Background: Internet gaming has become popular in the last few decades; however, very few studies have been conducted on internet gaming in India. This study aimed to investigate internet gaming disorder (IGD), its prevalence, gaming behavior, and effects as well as multiple factors associated with its emergence among college students. Methods: This cross-sectional study involved a group of 150 college students. Data were collected using a semi-structured questionnaire containing the Internet Gaming Disorder Scale-Short Form (IGDS9-SF). Statistical analysis was done using Jamovi software. Findings: A total of 150 college student gamers were involved with a mean age of 18.69±0.10 years. The mean IGD score was 18.74 with a standard deviation of 0.53, while the median score was 18. The prevalence of IGD was 5.3% among the participants. The IGD prevalence was higher in male students and those whose mothers had a high school diploma or higher. Gamers who spent more than2 hours a day on games had significantly higher IGD scores (P<0.05). A significant association was also found between tingling/numbness in the hand while playing and physical pain with IGD (P<0.05). Conclusion: Spending more time playing online games was significantly associated with a higher risk of IGD. One negative consequence of IGD is the development of physical health issues. It is important to raise awareness about the physical health consequences of excessive gaming among students, parents, institutions, and concerned authorities.

Purpose As technology becomes more widely accessible, there is a growing concern about internet gaming disorder (IGD) around the world. The aim of this study is to evaluate the prevalence of IGD and also assess the effects of depression, anxiety, stress and insomnia levels on the IGD of youths in Bangladesh. Design/methodology/approach A cross-sectional quantitative study design was used to collect data from the youths of different locations in Bangladesh between October 21, 2023 and January 15, 2024. A total of 501 samples were collected using the convenience sampling technique. The following measurement scales were Internet Gaming Disorder Scale short form, depression, anxiety and stress scales and insomnia severity index, which were used to assess scores for IGD, psychological distress and insomnia, respectively. Findings The study found that the prevalence of IGD was 9.8%. IGD was shown to be significantly associated with depression, anxiety and stress. Aside from that, IGD and insomnia had a significant association, as did a friendly family environment. Research limitations/implications The generalizability of the results could be improved by conducting additional studies with a more diverse sample, such as the general population or a different age group. Practical implications The study will help the government reduce the prevalence of IGD, improving the mental and physical health of youth. Originality/value No research has been conducted on youth and different professions in Bangladesh. There has also been very little research on the prevalence of gaming addiction and mental health.
