“…Our results are in line with findings from prior studies assessing compliance and persistence in hypertensive patients suggesting that treatment with ARBs is associated with significantly higher compliance and persistence rates than other anti-hypertensive drugs 20,21,24,25,[39][40][41][42][43] . Persistence indicates that both the patient and the clinician are willing to continue with the drug regimen 24 , and is especially important in treatment of hypertension, because the benefits of treating hypertension are achieved fully after at least 4 years of continuous treatment in a patient 44 .…”

“…Höer et al 42 examined persistence and compliance among patients on anti-hypertensive drug therapy in the reallife setting of a German sickness fund, showing the highest persistence after the prescriptions with ARBs compared with other anti-hypertensive agents. In a recently conducted study in Germany, Mathes et al 43 showed that the resource utilization in patients initiating monotherapy with ARBs is significantly lower compared to patients initiating therapy CCBs, ACEIs, and BBs. Fixed-dose dual combinations of ARBs in our study were associated not only with better compliance and persistence, but also with lower hospitalization rates and lower medication costs compared to unfixed combinations, regardless of age, gender, and diabetes status.…”

“…Tolerability was good, with a reduction of incidence of edema, known to be increased with amlodipine monotherapy at high doses. Fixed-dose combinations of antihypertensive drugs improve patient compliance which, in turn, is associated with a reduction in hospitalization and cardiovascular events 5,6…”

“…Furthermore, these patients were associated with a reduced risk of the first hypertension-associated events compared to diuretics, betablockers or calcium channel blockers suggesting the correlation of high therapy compliance with a reduced risk of first events 14 .…”

“…Olmesartan (OM), alone or in combination with hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ), has been shown to result in a substantial blood pressure reduction in randomized controlled trials 11 , has a good tolerability profile 12,13 , and belongs to a drug class that is known for its high compliance 14 . Compared to other ARBs once daily treatment with OM has been shown to be effective in treatment of hypertension with a high potential to lower blood pressure over 24 hours 15 with a comparable rapid onset 11 .…”
