Phenoxyacetic acids can be degraded by diverse soil microorganisms. Nevertheless, we miss information about the succession of 4-chloro-2-methylphenoxyacetic acid (MCPA) degraders in micro-environments of soils as well as specific functions of different microbial groups during MCPA degradation. We studied MCPA degradation at the soil-litter interface in a microcosm experiment and followed the succession of different degrader populations by quantifying the abundance of 16S rRNA genes as well as, the fungal ITS fragment and the functional genes tfdA (in total and divided into three classes) and cadA. Adjacent to the litter layer, a dynamic depletion zone of MCPA indicated that the litter effect on MCPA degradation depends on substrate availability and the affected soil volume. The increase of the tfdA class III and cadA genes was linked to MCPA mineralisation. Total abundance of tfdA genes was dominated by class I MCPA degraders and did not reflect MCPA degradation potential of the soil. Litter addition induced the development of pioneer and late-stage fungal communities, which were probably both involved in MCPA degradation. The results underline the importance of the ecological behaviour of different degrader populations for the understanding of herbicide degradation in soils.

Abstract. Interactions between different qualities of soil organic matter (SOM) affecting their turnover are rarely represented in models. In this study, we propose three mathematical strategies at different levels of abstraction to represent those interactions. By implementing these strategies into the Introductory Carbon Balance Model (ICBM) and applying them to several scenarios of litter input, we show that the different levels of abstraction are applicable at different timescales. We present a simple one-parameter equation of substrate limitation that can straightforwardly be implemented into other models of SOM dynamics at decadal timescale. The study demonstrates how substrate quality interactions can explain patterns of priming effects, accelerate turnover in FACE experiments, and the slowdown of decomposition in long-term bare fallow experiments as an effect of energy limitation of microbial biomass. The mechanisms of those interactions need to be further scrutinized empirically for a more complete understanding. Overall, substrate quality interactions contribute to both understanding and quantitatively modelling SOM dynamics.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the changes in ecotoxicity of agricultural soil under the infl uence of Agritox 500SL, an herbicide from the phenoxyacid group, containing MCPA (2-methyl-4-chlorophenoxyacetic acid), applied every 3 weeks for 3 months. Biodegradation potential in control and weathered soil was confi rmed by the analysis of the functional gene tfdA using PCR technique. Properties of the soil were assessed by the analysis of granulometric composition, pH, the content of macroelements and heavy metals. The soil ecotoxicity was measured using biotests Phytotoxkit ® and Microtox ® .The content of Ni (70 mg/kg) and Cr (21 mg/kg) was especially high in the soil with Agritox 500SL. The highest toxic effect for test organisms was observed in freshly spiked soil: 99% L. sativum, 97% S. alba, 66% S. saccharatum (% root growth inhibition) and 76% V. fi scheri (% luminescence inhibition). Weathering processes signifi cantly decreased the soil ecotoxicity being 36%, 34% and 3% for V. fi scherii, S. alba and L. sativum, respectively. S. saccharatum showed 12% stimulation of the root length. Molecular analysis confi rmed the potential of indigenous soil bacteria to biodegrade MCPA by the presence of tfdAα and tfdA Class III genes in the studied soil. The obtained results proved that either MCPA and residues of its decomposition or additional supporting substances in Agritox 500 SL, can infl uence enhanced soil ecototoxicity. The presence of functional tfdA genes in both: control and weathered soil, confi rmed the high potential of indigenous soil bacteria to degrade MCPA.
