The easy implementation of a nature-based solution (NBS) to address a prompt stabilisation of burnt areas may be crucial in the Mediterranean forest environment. A plot scale hydrological and ecological survey was conducted in a pine forest of the Aspromonte Massif (southern Italy) affected by a high fire severity in summer 2021. The hydrological response to 30 rainfall event groups is analysed by monitoring nine sloping plots distributed into three plot blocks (forested according to the pre-fire situation, burnt with randomly directed felled logs and burnt with manually felled logs redirected along contour lines). The hydrological response of bare soil is mitigated by about 30% through the combined effects of the NBS and the vegetation cover by pioneer species. Although the regeneration of Pinus radiata is scarcer in the arranged plots, the spontaneous vegetation, once gone, prepares better edaphic conditions for the triggering of forest dynamics assured by the auto-succession of Pinus radiata. In terms of woody mechanical resistance, NBS durability is compatible with the time required for seedlings to regenerate the forest ecosystem. The results achieved so far encourage further research on higher slopes and complementary aspects (vegetal and animal biodiversity, economic factors, etc.).

Grassland aboveground biomass (AGB) is a key variable to measure grassland productivity, and accurate assessment of AGB is important for optimizing grassland resource management and understanding carbon, water, and energy fluxes. Current approaches on large scales such as the Mongolian Steppe Ecosystem often combine field measurements with optical and/or synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data. Meanwhile, especially the representativeness of the field measurements for large‐scale analysis have seldom been accounted for. Therefore, we provide the first remotely sensed AGB product for central and Eastern Mongolia which (1) uses random forest (RF), (2) is fully validated against over 600 field samples, and (3) applies a novel method, dissimilarity index (DI), to derive the area of applicability of the model with respect to the training data. Therefore, different remote sensing data sources such as multi‐scale and multi‐temporal optical images—Worldview 2 (WV2), Sentinel 2 (S2), and Landsat 8 (L8) in combination with SAR data are tested for their suitability to provide an area‐wide estimation on large scale. The results showed that the AGB prediction by combining Sentinel 1 (S1) and S2 using RF had the highest accuracy. Furthermore, the model was applicable to at least 72.61% of the steppe area. Areas where the model was not applicable are mostly distributed along the edges of grassland. This study demonstrates the potential of combining Sentinel‐derived indices and machine learning to provide a reliable AGB prediction for grassland for extremely large ecosystems with strong climatic gradients.

Wildfires are closely associated with human activities and global climate change, but they also affect human health, safety, and the eco-environment. The ability of understanding wildfire dynamics is important for managing the effects of wildfires on infrastructures and natural environments. Geospatial technologies (remote sensing and GIS) provide a means to study wildfires at multiple temporal and spatial scales using an efficient and quantitative method. This chapter presents an overview of the applications of geospatial technologies in wildfire management. Applications related to pre-fire conditions management (fire hazard mapping, fire risk mapping, fuel mapping), monitoring fire conditions (fire detection, detection of hot-spots, fire thermal parameters, etc.) and post-fire condition management (burnt area mapping, burn severity, soil erosion assessments, post-fire vegetation recovery assessments and monitoring) are discussed. Emphasis is given to the roles of multispectral sensors, lidar and evolving UAV/drone technologies in mapping, processing, combining and monitoring various environmental characteristics related to wildfires. Current and previous researches are presented, and future research trends are discussed. It is wildly accepted that geospatial technologies provide a low-cost, multi-temporal means for conducting local, regional and global-scale wildfire research, and assessments.
