The objective of this research is to examine the history of lentic ecosystem salinity in the southern Pantanal wetlands (Brazil). The timing and controls on hydrochemical changes were inferred using sponge spicule and diatom paleoecology on a Holocene-aged sediment core from Nhecolândia, a lake district situated on a fossil lobe of the Taquari megafan. The oldest portion of the core contains Heterorotula fistula spicules, indicative of an ephemeral freshwater lake that existed until * 4.6 cal ka BP. Benthic diatoms of the genus Gomphonema and Eunotia appeared * 3.2 cal ka BP, indicating a shallow and dystrophic environment. A transition to a more permanent lake that hosted freshwater sponges (e.g., Corvoheteromeyenia spp.), and diatom assemblages (e.g., Cyclotella meneghiniana, Aulacoseira pantanalensis) endured until * 1.3 cal year BP; after this time, most sponges and planktic diatoms disappear from the sedimentary record. High abundances of Anomoeoneis sphaerophora and Craticula guaykuruorum in the latest Holocene reflect a transition to a hyperalkaline, saline lake environment. The results suggest that Nhecolândia's saline lakes may evolve from freshwater precursors due to local (biochemical) and regional (geo-climatic) controls on water availability, which has implications for patterns of biodiversity and ecosystems services in Pantanal.

The Pantanal has an exuberant biodiversity that is constantly regulated by the dynamics of the climate and by the flood pulses. The objective of this work was to characterize and evaluate the biotic (macrophytes and macroinvertebrates) and abiotic factors (pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen, conductivity, total dissolved solids, water turbidity, chlorophyll a and pheophytin-a) of Pantanal ponds depending on the dry or rainy season. Therefore, five ponds with different characteristics were analyzed and five samples of water were collected during the dry and rainy season. For sampling of the macrophytes and collection of the macroinvertebrates we used hand nets (area of 0,09m 2 , opening of 5000 μm). This was done in order to observe seasonal difference in pH, chlorophyll-a and pheophytin-a and spatial differences between dissolved oxygen, electrical conductivity, turbidity, chlorophyll a and pheophytin-a was observed. The aquatic macrophyte Eichornia azurea ( Commelinales, Ponteridaceae) showed high dominance and relative vegetation cover in at least three ponds, which was also related to higher values of macroinvertebrate biomass. On the other hand, the ponds that presented low dominance or absence of E. azurea presented high diversity of aquatic macrophytes. However, these intrinsic biological characteristics of the ponds altogether with the abiotic parameters demonstrated that there are distinct patterns in the dynamics of these ecosystems during the drought and flood regimes.

The Upper Paraguay Basin Plateau (UPRB) concentrates the headwaters and the largest volume of rain that supply the Pantanal biome and is essential for maintaining its water regime. Given the region's changes in land use and cover, this research sought to identify their influence on headwater flows. The use of conceptual models and time series analysis showed that the replacement of natural vegetation with pasture and the more recent activity of irrigated agriculture have produced changes in the hydrological response of the headwaters. There was a decreasing tendency of low flows during dry periods, which was correlated with anthropic changes in the use and cover of the land in the region. The research results point out changes in land use and cover as the cause of a significant decrease in streamflows during drier periods. Such behaviour at the headwaters of the Pantanal can have consequences for this biome, reducing the resilience of the system against droughts and damaging the biodiversity of the biome.
