OBJECTIVE:To analyze the spatial and seasonal distribution of leptospirosis and identify possible ecological and social components of its transmission. METHODS:A total of 2,490 cases registered in each district of the municipality of São Paulo, Southeastern Brazil, between 1998 and 2006, were georeferenced. The data were obtained from the Notifi able Diseases Information System. Thematic maps were made, showing the variables of incidence rate, lethality rate, literacy rate, average monthly income, number of residents per household, water supply and sewage system. To identify spatial patterns (dispersed, clustered or random), these variables were analyzed using the global and local Moran indices. Spearman's correlation coeffi cient was used to test associations between variables with clustered spatial patterns. RESULTS:Clustered spatial patterns were observed for the variables of leptospirosis incidence, literacy rate, average monthly income, number of residents per household, water supply and sewage system. There were 773 notifi ed cases in the dry season and 1,717 cases in the rainy season. The incidence and lethality rates correlated with the population's socioeconomic conditions, independently of the period. CONCLUSIONS:Leptospirosis is spread throughout the municipality of São Paulo, and its incidence increases during the rainy season. In the dry season, the localities where cases appear coincide with the areas of poorest housing conditions. In the rainy season, it also increases in other districts, probably due to the proximity of rivers and streams.

This article addresses the themes of inequality and difference in water governance in Brazil. The production of hierarchies in the arenas of governance is discussed, defending the hypothesis that the shift from difference to inequality is the result of practices of justification that consolidate the sovereignty of technical competence in environmental management. Some of the more significant findings of studies about the structure and functioning of River Basin Committees in different regions of the country are taken as reference for this discussion. Based on these findings, we discuss the discursive production of the Committees, the authority of the agents that embody the new principles of management, and the implications of the process of scientification of the politics. The article concludes by pointing out the importance of diversity in the construction of a new narrative of environmental governance.

O urbano em questão na antropologia:interfaces com a sociologia 1Heitor Frúgoli Jr. Professor do Departamento de Antropologia -USPRESUMO: O artigo aborda temas em torno da dimensão urbana na antropologia, explorando diálogos de fronteira entre tal disciplina e a sociologia em três momentos específicos: o primeiro sobre as décadas iniciais da Escola de Chicago, época de definição de uma pauta de pesquisas etnográficas sobre a cidade e a cultura urbana, com investigações pioneiras sobre a segregação socioespacial, com ênfase no conceito de gueto; no segundo, analisam-se interfaces entre a antropologia e a sociologia urbanas em São Paulo, nas décadas de 1970 e 1980, em torno do tema da periferia, com a produção de pesquisas marcadas pela polarização entre os conceitos de cultura e ideologia; finalmente, enfocam-se desafios contemporâneos à antropologia urbana, buscando-se retomar tópicos de um diálogo disciplinar que ocorre apenas implicitamente, bem como reaver o tema da periferia, tendo em vista fenômenos recentes que implicam tomá-la simultaneamente como espacialidade, processo e conjunto polifônico de representações nativas.PALAVRAS-CHAVE: antropologia urbana, sociologia urbana, diálogos de fronteira, segregação socioespacial.
