Abstract: The magnetic ions of an anharmonic crystal are assumed to interact through the Heisenberg exchange. In the temperature dependence of the exchange constants contributions from the lattice oscillations are included in addition to the usual exchange-strictive term. The role of exchangestriction in the metamagnetic transition is reexamined and a new criterion for metamagnetism is formulated.
