Reference Design of ICRF Antenna for EAST

Abstract: An antenna array suitable for plasma heating and current drive has been designed for the ion cyclotron resonance frequency range (ICRF) heating on the EAST superconducting tokamak. The ICRF heating is planned to operate in a frequency range of 30 MHz to 80 MHz and hence the antenna geometry is optimized for 55 MHz. The design is based on the conventional strap antenna element. The coupling properties of the antenna are calculated with a slab model of the plasma for the antenna simulation. The coupling code is … Show more

“…The ICRF heating experiments which are successfully performed in EAST [5] have demonstrated the utility of this heating method in hydrogen minority in deuterium plasma [6] . Significant performances of this heating method have also been demonstrated [7] and ICRF heating producing high-confinement (H mode) has been achieved in the last campaign of EAST [8] .…”

“…The ICRF system on the EAST [5][6][7] consists of eight transmission lines, each line includes a transmitter [8], liquid stub tuners [9], a decoupler [10,11], and the antenna [12,13] as shown in figure 1. The main diagnostic system in the transmission line includes a directional coupler, the voltage probes array, and the V/I probes array.…”

“…With the aim of predicting the potential contours and the electric field distribution of the vacuum feedthrough, an electro-analysis is conducted for the vacuum feedthrough. In order to transmit a certain power to the plasma without breakdown in the feeding coaxial line, with the standard dry air breakdown field of E b = 2.1 MV/m [11] , the maximum allowable voltage of the transmission line is given by [4] V b = 2.42…”

“…Heating and current drive using the ICRF wave have been proposed in EAST, with its main parameters of R 0 = 1.75 m, a = 0.4 m, κ = 1.6∼1.8, δ = 0.8, B t = 3.5 T, I P = 1 MA and t pulse = 1000 s [4] . The ICRF system in EAST was designed to operate at a flexible frequency in a range of 30 MHz to 110 MHz.…”
