Reduction of Molten Iron Oxide and FeO Bearing Slag with H&lt;SUB&gt;2&lt;/SUB&gt;-Ar Plasma

The investigations of reducing Fe1‐xO in liquid state with H2+Ar mixtures, in top blowing stream of gas reactor, by using thermobalance method have been carried out. To make the system more homogeneous pure iron crucibles were used in the experiment. The experiments were carried out in the range of gas flow rate V = (5+80) · 10−6 m3/s and in 1723 K. Reduction rate depends on hydrogen partial pressure and flow rate of gas mixture. The logarithm of apparent reduction rate constant is a linear function of logarithm of gas flow rate. In experimental conditions of this work, the initial rate of reduction satisfies the relation . Thus it has been shown that the reduction process is controlled by the mass transfer in the gaseous phase. Sherwood numbers obtained from observed values of reduction rates and empirical equation of the gas‐phase mass transfer rate are correlated by equation . The values of mass transfer coefficient in gas phase calculated from Sherwood numbers are consistent with the values of apparent reduction rate constant and with estimated rate constant of chemical reaction of liquid Fe1‐xO reduction.

Interfacial kinetics on the hydrogen reduction of liquid Fe t O in Fe t O-M x O y slag (M x O y ϭ CaO, SiO 2 , Al 2 O 3 , and TiO 2 ) has been studied at 1673 K. Because the rate of hydrogen reduction was very fast, the rate was controlled by gas-phase mass transfer under most of the experimental conditions. The effect of CaO or SiO 2 addition on the interfacial chemical reaction rate of hydrogen reduction was empirically evaluated as a function of the ferrous-ferric ratio in the slag. The observed interfacial chemical reaction rates in Fe t O-CaO and Fe t O-SiO 2 slags showed reasonable agreement with the estimated values. Most of the available literature data on the reduction rate of liquid iron oxide by solid carbon, hot metal, and reducing gases were also reviewed and compared with the results of the present work. It was found that the rate of hydrogen reduction of liquid iron oxide slag is much faster than that with other reducing agents such as solid carbon, carbon dissolved in the liquid iron, and CO gas.

A new furnace concept is described in which it is possible to produce either iron or steel directly from fine iron ores, concentrates, or wastes. The heat for the endothermic reduction reactions and for the melting of the metal and slag phases is supplied by a plasma device. The plasma is formed by injecting arc stabilizing gases or materials into a carbon arc. The material to be processed is passed both through a preheater and a column or flash reactor before entering the plasma zone prior to the completion of the reduction reactions and fusion of the metal and slag in the hearth zone. Reduction mechanisms in all of the furnace zones are investigated and temperature profiles are reported. The behavior of carbon, silicon, manganese, titanium, sulphur and phosphorus in the reactor is described.
