Non-communicable chronic diseases (NCCDs) are the main cause of morbidity and mortality globally. Demographic aging has resulted in older populations with more complex healthcare needs. This necessitates a multilevel rethinking of healthcare policies, health education and community support systems with digitalization of technologies playing a central role. The European Innovation Partnership on Active and Healthy Aging (A3) working group focuses on well-being for older adults, with an emphasis on quality of life and healthy aging. A subgroup of A3, including multidisciplinary stakeholders in health care across Europe, focuses on the palliative care (PC) model as a paradigm to be modified to meet the needs of older persons with NCCDs. This development paper delineates the key parameters we identified as critical in creating a public health model of PC directed to the needs of persons with NCCDs. This paradigm shift should affect horizontal components of public health models. Furthermore, our model includes vertical components often neglected, such as nutrition, resilience, well-being and leisure activities. The main enablers identified are information and communication technologies, education and training programs, communities of compassion, twinning activities, promoting research and increasing awareness amongst policymakers. We also identified key ‘bottlenecks’: inequity of access, insufficient research, inadequate development of advance care planning and a lack of co-creation of relevant technologies and shared decision-making. Rethinking PC within a public health context must focus on developing policies, training and technologies to enhance person-centered quality life for those with NCCD, while ensuring that they and those important to them experience death with dignity.

Influence of Artificial Intelligence in Education on Adolescents’ Social Adaptability: A Machine Learning Study

This study aimed to investigate the influence of artificial intelligence in education (AIEd) on adolescents’ social adaptability, as well as to identify the relevant psychosocial factors that can predict adolescents’ social adaptability. A total of 1328 participants (meanage = 13.89, SD = 2.22) completed the survey. A machine-learning algorithm was used to find out whether AIEd may influence adolescents’ social adaptability as well as the relevant psychosocial variables, such as teacher–student relations, peer relations, interparental relations, and loneliness that may be significantly related to social adaptability. Results showed that it has a positive influence of AIEd on adolescents’ social adaptability. In addition, the four most important factors in the prediction of social adaptability among AI group students are interpersonal relationships, peer relations, academic emotion, and loneliness. A high level of interpersonal relationships and peer relations can predict a high level of social adaptability among the AI group students, while a high level of academic emotion and loneliness can predict a low level of social adaptability. Overall, the findings highlight the need to focus interventions according to the relation between these psychosocial factors and social adaptability in order to increase the positive influence of AIEd and promote the development of social adaptability.

PurposeChildren suffering from cancer or cardiovascular disease, who need extended periods of treatment in hospitals, are subjected to multiple hardships apart from the physical implications, for example, experienced isolation and disrupted social and academic development. This has negative effects long after the child's recovery from the illness. The purpose of this paper is to examine the non-medical needs of children suffering from a long-term illness, as well as research the field of artificial intelligence (AI) – more specifically, the use of socially intelligent agents (SIAs) – in order to study how technology can enhance children's interaction, participation and quality of life.Design/methodology/approachInterviews were performed with experts in three fields: housing manager for hospitalized children, a professor in computing science and researcher in AI, and an engineer and developer at a tech company.FindingsIt is important for children to be able to take control of the narrative by using an SIA to support the documentation of their period of illness, for example. This could serve as a way of processing emotions, documenting educational development or keeping a reference for later in life. The findings also show that the societal benefits of AI include automating mundane tasks and recognizing patterns.Originality/valueThe originality of this study concerns the holistic approach of increasing the knowledge and understanding of these children's specific needs and challenges, particularly regarding their participation and interaction with teachers and friends at school, using an SIA.
